Stories, poems, and essays from native Brooklynites about life in the borough before this recent wave of gentrification; a teaser for the upcoming book.
Alicia Anabel Santos is a Brooklyn-born Dominican and self-identified Latina lesbian writer, motivational speaker, performance artist, producer, playwright, and activist, her stories celebrate and honor women throughout Latin America. She is the founder of the New York City Latina Writers Group. Recently, she was invited to NPR’s “Tell Me More” and her work has been seen in Latina magazine. In 2011 Alicia published her memoir, Finding Your Force: A Journey to Love. She has worked for renowned magazines BusinessWeek, and Glamour, but it was an article published in Urban Latino magazine, “Two Cultures Marching to One Drum,” which would change the direction of her life. In 2008, she joined Creador Pictures as Writer /Co-Producer of its first documentary, AfroLatinos: The Untaught Story. She attended New York University and lives in Harlem, NYC with her daughter, Courtniana.
Blu Daniels aka Tiffany Jackson is a TV professional by day, novelist by night, awkward black girl 24/7. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Film from Howard University and her Master of Arts in Media Studies from The New School University. Throughout her career, she has worked for various television and media companies, including National Geographic, Roc Nation, BET and FUSE TV. In 2009, she wrote and directed the short horror film, The Field Trip, receiving praise in the film festival circuit. A Brooklynite hailing from FT. Greene and Brooklyn Heights, she is a lover of naps, cookie dough, and beaches. She currently resides in Crown Heights with her adorable chihuahua, Oscar, working on her next two novels. Misconceptions is her first novel.
Rebeca L. Lucret is a native New Yorker, born and raised in Brooklyn, now residing in the Bronx. Rebeca is a poet and former contributing writer for Blacktino.net. She is an active member of the New York City Latina Writer’s Group and of the Women Writing in Bloom Poetry Salon. During her spare time she frequents poetry venues, writing workshops and culturally themed events. She is currently working her first collection of poems and her memoir, Dandelion Strands.
NuyoRican author Theresa Varela holds a PhD in Nursing Research and Theory Development from New York University. As a psychiatric nurse practitioner she works with the mentally ill homeless people of NYC. She writes poetry and prose on the impact of culture and spirituality on urban health with a slant of humor and magical realism. Covering the Sun with My Hand, her debut novel, was published in 2013 by Aignos Publishing Inc. Her second novel, a mystery, Do No Harm, will also be published by Aignos in 2015. Raquel I. Penzo is a Brooklyn, NY native who has carved a career for herself as a writer, editor and literary event curator, hosting the New Voices Reading Series each quarter in NYC and working as a copywriter at Brooklyn Public Library. She authored the self-published My Ego Likes the Compliments…And Other Musings on Writing, and the short stories, “Grey Matter,” published online at Blue Lake Review, and “On a Blue Day,” published in the zine You Should Be Here.
