IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM THE FOUNDER OF NYCLWG:
Why we MUST support each other???
One of the things I have heard over the years is HOW SPECIAL THE NYC LATINA’S GROUP IS!
The NYC Latina Writer’s Group is special for so many reasons:
Our gatherings are always filled with love, laughter, revelations, sharing, tears, joy, anger, honesty and TRUTH!
When we show up to support events throughout the city we SHOW OUT in numbers… and we don’t have to be the one FEATURED to show our love and support… we just go to show love… this is what WE DO… this is WHO WE ARE!
As I think about the upcoming 8th Year Anniversary, I think about how much we have accomplished and all that we have yet to do!
Supporting one another is probably the most important element of this group… a tie for first is WRITING together.
Today I wake up with ONE message for you – – let’s support one another. And I don’t just mean financially, although I know many of you are fundraising for beautiful projects and publishing your own work which I fully support and am incredibly proud of. Supporting each other is pulling each other up, getting together to write, coming to NYCLWG meetings, sharing a loving word, providing each other with resources and opportunities, attending local literature events and promoting all the great work this collective is putting out into the world.
Last summer Andreina Garcia emailed me a story about a writer from the West Coast who published her suicide note on her blog (her last post). I spent an entire week crying over this young woman. I wrote a blog in honor of her and could not seem to get her out of my mind. I wanted to do something for her… I wanted to do something for girls like her… I wanted her to know that even though she is gone, and even though I didn’t know her she was not alone… so many of us have felt the sadness she felt. And so, I asked Andreina to reach out to her friends and family to see if they would allow us to honor this amazing young woman at our 7th Annual Anniversary of the NYC Latina Writer’s Group. We wanted to not only celebrate this amazing Latina Writer, Woman of Color, Lesbian, and Filmmaker — on this evening I awarded Wendy Angulo the first annual:
VANESSA LIBERTAD GARCIA, Writing Scholarship. (attached please read my blog post dedicated to her. Here you will also find a link to her webiste)
I share this because I need your support!
On Monday, June 9th Vanessa’s mother will be in NYC — presenting a play she has written with Playwright extraordinaire Rock WILK about her daughter. Her mother Libertad is coming all the way from West Coast and knows NO ONE here. She is solely coming to share this story. I need you there! We need you there. I really would love a full house for this incredible story!
I am reaching out to you because I really need the NYCLWG and all of our supporters to come out and show Vanessa’s mother some love and encouragement, so that she knows that her daughter and all of the women storytellers who have gone before her LIVE ON!
I am personally asking you to support a very special event on:
Monday, June 9th
Katarina Bar & Grill
125-22 Queens Boulevard
Kew Gardens, NY 11415
FREE FREE FREE
Please spread the word. And never forget we need each other.
Thank you Andreina for being instrumental in connecting us with her… and thank you Rock WILK for being a gentle guide.
With so much love,
PLEASE SHARE, LIKE AND POST EVERYWHERE!
