Writing as a Meditation ~ Day 28

October 28th

As I wake up this morning… today I wake up in New York. I am literally only here for a minute and then out again. It has been a week since I have posted a meditation on writing. My body feels somewhat rested. My mind feels like it has been running all over the world. This morning I woke up think about Junot Diaz. This morning I need a jolt! A kick!

What is that thing that keeps a writer writing?

What is that that thing that keeps me writing?

OUR stories keep me writing…
Women keep me writing…
My daughter keeps me writing…

What keeps me writing is a very specific hunger… a deep desire to see myself, my story revealed. Writing for me is to see MY SELF reflected in books. There seems to be only one kind of story… Its that popular stories… and bullshit that sells about or for Latinas…

“She is the sex pot…”
“She is the firey woman…”
“She is the one with the temper…”
“She has that deep spanish sounding accent, wearing an apron and stirring a pot with a child on her hip or an iron in her hand…”
“She is the butt of the joke…”
“She walks down the street and men have already undressed her…”
“She isn’t to be taken seriously…”

This is why I write…

If I have to read one more crap story… please

I write because Latina’s are brilliant. We are rich not just because of our culture… because we contribute greatly to the universal story. *Insert a GTFOH with the lies and stereotypes TV sells. Latinas have much to say about many things and we are versed in many subjects! These are the stories I am interested in hearing about.

This is why I have always had this resistance about being seen as pretty. Don’t call me pretty! I wanted to be seen as smart!

My intention for today is to explore what keeps me writing… but more specifically what keeps me writing THIS story… about these womyn… my intention for today is to really focus on some research for the story.

Today’s prompts:

As I wake up this morning… (set timer for 5 minutes)
This morning I need… (set timer for 5 minutes)
What keeps me writing… (set timer for 5 minutes)
My intention for today… (set timer for 5 minutes)

BREATHE

10 minute research: Make a list of all the things you must get right in the story. Be specific. Only pick the most important details… like a car or a song.

BREATHE/STRETCH

30 minutes writing/research: Be selective don’t get lost in the research… be intentional… spend 10 minutes researching ONE detail or moment, pick three sources. We must begin learning how to NOT procrastinate and spend hours just researching. Now for 20 minutes read and write about what you learned. BEGIN!

And so it is. Namaste. Aché

With all my love,
Alicia
