Poets & Writers, The NYC Latina Writers Group, & BAAD! Bronx Academy of Arts & Dance are honored to offer a Master Poetry Class: A Nuyorican State of Mind: Poetry of Witness with Nancy Mercado, Ph.D.
In undergrad I took a psychology class where the professor shared an example of the “Bystander effect/apathy,” where passers by witnessed an atrocity, accident, and/or a scary situation while there were many people present, few stopped to help the victim(s). It was about observing how many people helped versus continued on their merry way.
The finding of the study: “the greater the number of bystanders, the less likely it is that any one of them will help.” These people would be considered witnesses.
In the upcoming masters workshop: “Poetry of Witness” Nancy expands on the idea of ‘subject and writer’s experiences’ as witness!
What have we witnessed?
What are our responsibilities as writers?
What are the atrocities, experiences, and memories that we have seen in our own lives or in today’s society that we are being called to document?
There are stories stirring… things that must be witnessed and documented.
Attached please find the details and more about our workshop facilitator: Nancy Mercado.
