Day 23: Writing Challenge ~ #wewrite

The blank page…

Today my only intention is to sit in front the blank screen and write one word at time. I have an important deadline today. I am not concerned with it being brilliant or my best writing yet. The point is to get the words on the page. My intention is to write from the core of my truth. I will write with honesty and vulnerability.  My thoughts today have already been tainted by Facebook and all forms of social media. Just in one hour I have spent more time reading things I don’t necessarily need to be reading and also read some really beautiful pieces.  Writing with focused intention and direction is important to me.

For me writing is my spiritual practice or at least a very important part of my practice. Even now typing these words on my phone… There is something really freeing about being in a quiet space, no demands for my time, and alone with my thoughts. I can hear birds chirping at my window. I am thinking about the hawk that landed on my window and sat with me for two hours. This beautiful large bird crash landed at my window in the very moment I asked for a sign. A sign that I would be ok. A sign that I was on the right track. These birds have showed up as a reminder. They are having a full blown conversation. This posse of birds. I wonder what they are saying to each other? Are they planning their travel route? Are they resting? Are they telling stories? They are babies. Tiny little newborns. Rebirth.  Why do you write?

Who are you writing for?

What is the story you were born to tell? These answers will change. Our reasons will grow. Hopefully! For me, I must constantly remind myself why I write and why writing matters so much to me. Writing has given me so many gifts. The stories I am writing are important. We must always remember that we were chosen.

Writing Prompts:

(1) Why do you write? (15 minutes)

(2) Who are you writing for? (15 minutes)

(3) What is the story you were born to tell? (15 minutes)

(4) When did you know you were a writer? (10 minutes)

(5) Have you ever experienced a rebirth? Share this story. (10 minutes)

Remove yourself from this exercise. Let the character speak. Shut up and listen.

Set your timer for the time allotted. Do not lift the pen off of the page. Do not over think. Do not censor or self edit. You are writing from a stream of consciousness. Trust what wants to be written. If you get stuck begin the prompt again… GO!!!

There are things we fear as writers. Certain truths we rather keep hidden. Let’s go there!

The intention for these prompts is to help you flush out your story and look for the scenes you might want to write. Whether we are writing fiction or non-fiction there are moments (the great stories do this well) where we are called to feel things. Allow us to feel everything. Allow us to see everything. Bring us into this world.

Joining in on my writing challenge and writers commitment! Here are the TWO rules:

1. Check in for yesterdays writing each day:
How was yesterday? (post if you wrote, didn’t write, got stuck, need some support.)

Did you find it challenging to carve in the time to write? If we are honest with ourselves where could we have begun instead of doing…….. (Fill in the blank-leave your response in the comments). Yesterday is done. We are not beating ourselves up. Today we get to begin again.

I AM committed to writing everyday!

I AM completely off FB or any form of social media until the days writing is done!

I WILL check in once a day everyday to share that I have met our goal!

If you are writing fiction or non-fiction, choose to write the prompt from whichever POV, or character you choose-i.e. 1st or third person.

Writing Prompt:

(1) Why do you write? (15 minutes)

(2) Who are you writing for? (15 minutes)

(3) What is the story you were born to tell? (15 minutes)

(4) When did you know you were a writer? (10 minutes)

(5) Have you ever experienced a rebirth? Share this story. (10 minutes) Check in later.

Happy writing!

  1. I love this! I especially love the idea of writing because we have a voice. I do. And I also enjoy the quote by Anne Morrow Lindberg but it is all wonderful. Time for me to go do some writing now.
